Following the reintroduction of the Chronomat collection last year (in 32mm, 36mm, and 42mm models), Breitling now presents the new, even larger Super Chronomat, boasting a 44mm case. This new size is available in several versions, including a watch with a UTC modular bracelet, an 18K red gold model, and two watches featuring a rare four-year calendar function.

The new Super Chronomat perfectly embodies the "grand" concept, serving as both a classic Breitling timepiece and a tribute to the brand's long-standing dominance in oversized pilot's chronographs.

The original Breitling Chronomat, born in 1984, was a 39mm timepiece designed to pay homage to the era's fascination with high-speed jet aircraft. Its design was inspired by a model created for the Italian Flying Tricolori aerobatic team in 1983, echoing the era of the film *Top Gun* (1986) and the Blue Angels' debut in the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet (also in 1986).

As a boy born in that era (also in 1986), the most exciting part of my social life was attending air shows—my earliest memories of cool watches are deeply etched in the grounds of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. The newly launched Super Chronomat watch in 2021 is a complete upgrade to the classic 80s design. Available models include: the Super Chronomat B01 44 with a black or blue dial (with rubber, stainless steel, or stainless steel with the ultra-cool UTC module strap); the B01 Chronograph with an 18K red gold case, brown dial, and bezel (also with a bracelet or rubber strap); and the Super Chronomat 44 Quadruple Calendar with a black or blue/two-tone dial (also with a rubber or stainless steel strap). replica Richard Mille RM 067-01

The pure chronograph (with "B01" in its name) has a 44mm diameter and 14.45mm thickness, a transparent case back, and is water-resistant to 200 meters. It is powered by the Breitling B01 automatic chronograph movement, COSC certified, featuring a column wheel and vertical clutch. The bezel uses ceramic inserts (a first for the Chronomat series), and the riding bezels at 3 and 9 o'clock are interchangeable, allowing the bezel to be used for both chronograph and countdown functions (a signature feature of the original Chronomat).

As for the Grand Chronograph Four-Year Calendar, the diameter remains 44mm, but the thickness has slightly increased to 14.55mm. Water resistance has decreased to 100 meters. This feature-rich chronograph is powered by the Breitling Caliber 19 movement. Based on the ETA 2892-A2 movement, which has been used in many Breitling watches, the Caliber 19 features a modular design, integrating not only chronograph functionality but also a calendar function for all years except leap years.

Like most complex calendar watches (especially those integrated into sports watches), this timepiece features a rather intricate dial design, with most subdials multitasking, displaying 12-hour timekeeping, day of the week, date, month, and moon phase. This calendar design is uncommon, but I understand its appeal: it offers most of the functions of a perpetual calendar without incurring its high cost. It's worth noting that the Caliber 19 (sometimes referred to by Breitling as 1461) is not an annual calendar (which requires annual adjustment). As the name suggests, this four-year calendar watch only needs adjustment once, on February 29th.

Functionality aside, while I know the 44mm size is too large for me (I'll always prefer a 40mm aviation watch), the Grand Chronograph looks good, and more importantly, it looks like a truly large Breitling watch.
